Last weekend, snowfalls in Europe blocked many of the most popular tourist routes. For example, Iberian Peninsula is absolutely covered with snow that, according to meteorologists, happens once in 30 years. As a result, roads in Portugal in Spain are partly blocked, including highways, which connect large cities of the country and mountain roads in Granada and Valencia. ‘Road services could not cope with snow drifts and as a result travel companies had to make changes to their tour programs’, said Olga Minaeva, Coordination Director of Solus Company, to a BANKO correspondent, ‘we had to cancel monasteries visits which are within many programs. Instead we offered our tourists more excursions in Madrid, Barcelona and other cities’.
The south of France was also affected by snowfalls, where 140 small towns were cut of electricity. According to World Home such weather catastrophes do not affect big hotels, as they are equipped with separate generators, while small hotels can easily be in ‘dark zone’.
Meanwhile, national resorts were also in the area of bad weather. Due to avalanching a road to Sochi resort Krasnaya Polyana was blocked, ITAR – TASS reported. According to managers of Skiing Resorts Department of Rosa Vetrov, the snow drift was immediately eliminated and there is no danger of avalanching at the moment. ‘In Russia people have got accustomed to such accidents; therefore tourists are transferred to targeted destinations without problems. And much snow is good for skiing!’ said experts.
