A BANKO correspondent found out that on February 8th a representative of Vienna Tourist Board, Markus Penz, contacted Austrian incoming companies in order to find out the effects of the recent visa regulations on the tourist flow from Russia (news/ 23.01, 26.01, 31.01, 2.02). Penz referred to two sources: an official letter from Sergey Shpilko, President of Russian Travel Industry Union, sent to Federal Chancellor of Austria on January 31st, and a news item Echoes of the Past published by BANKO on January 31st.
‘At the moment Vienna Tourist Board is passed about the situation with Russian tourist flow’, said Sergey Khomyakov, General Director of Austrian Company Melour. However, Austrian operators still do not know weather Tourist Board plans to take action. Markus Penz gave a brief answer to a BANKO correspondent’s question: ‘I did contacted Austrian incoming companies, but I can not provide you with details’. He also added that Vienna Tourist Board decision would be revealed in two weeks.
Meanwhile, players of both Austrian and Russian travel markets do not show much enthusiasm towards the Austrian authorities’ initiative. ‘I do not think it is a step forward the decision of the problem. At the moment we are going round in a circle. The outcome is still to be seen’, said General Director Deputy of Moscow Office of Mondial Booking Center, Dmitryi Krotov.
